Found the instructions for the front air install! for anyone interested this is the writeup that airkewld had last year when i purchased my kit. Thanks

Had to cut and paste it in cuz i didnt have the correct file to upload.

Airkewld's Super Beetle Air Ride Kit (ARK)

This kit is designed for show purposes only. Airkewld and ail of its personnel are not responsible for any misinstallation, modification, or mishaps with the installation of this product. The consumer buying and installing this kit is completely responsible for all and every liability once installed.

1. Disconnect the battery
2. Raise the front of the car and put on jack stands.
3. Remove the wheels.
4. Remove the 3 bottom bolts attaching the lower strut mount to the swing arm.
5. Remove brake line clips and brake line.
6. Pop open the hood and remove the 3 nuts attaching the strut to the body.
7. Remove the strut.
8. You will need a spring compressor to compress the spring so you can remove the
upper nut attaching the upper strut mount to the strut insert. Pop off the cap and
remove the nut. Make sure your safety goggles are on.
9. Remove the strut mount, spring and dust cover.
10. Now you will need to remove the cartridge. To do this, you will need to unscrew the
cartridge holder.
11. Once removed, you will need to cut the lower strut mount. Measure from the lower
triangle mount up 6 1/4" and mark. Cut here with a chop say or cutting tool and de-
bur.
12. Next you will need to drill a 7/16" hole on the bottom of the strut mount. Once
drilled, sand down until a flat mounting surface is acquired.
13. Install upper mount onto your new Kewl Struts with the supplied hardware. Make
sure you use lock tite.
14. Install the OEM upper strut mount to the Kewl Strut with the supplied hardware.
15. Now, you will need to install the shaft extender to the strut shaft. Remember lock
tite is your friend.
16. Bolt the extender to the OEM lower strut mount and tighten. Now reinstall the new
Kewl Strut and reverse steps 7 through 4.
17. With the supplied custom fittings, you will need to use a thread compound or Teflon
tape to the Kewl Strut. Do not over tighten. Be careful. The way these fittings work
is by inserting a straight cut piece of tubing into the fitting until it pops into place
and then pull out to engage them. If you need to remove them again, simply push
the brass rings in and pull out the tubing.
18. Run your air lines to the supplied expansion chambers and run the kit to your
manual valves.
19. Do a leak test on the air lines. Please take your time so you will not have a problem
in the future. Use a soapy solution on the fittings and fix if necessary.
20. Reinstall the wheels and remove the jack stands. Make sure the car is inflated so you
do not damage your front apron with the floor jack.
21. Now deflate! BOOM! Rock bottom!

Hope this helps some. Some modifying is needed depending on your kit but its the basic setup. i had to do a lot of shaving and smoothing to get parts to fit! Hopefully soon i will get some pics up in the garage to show how i did it. Thanks

sounds good guys! i started the front install but taking a bit more fabricating than i was expecting. i think i can get the front a bit lower if i modify the strut mount extenders that came with my original package you sold last year. So once i get those modified i will start adding pics with some descriptions cuz looks like i gathered some interest on the forum so def want to help SB friends! thanks.

The times that I have called about anything you always take the time to listen to me and understand what I am trying to do, and then provide the answers that I need to keep going. I am looking forward to working more with you of future builds.

Yes will will need seals with those bushings. http://store.airkewld.com/e-shop-online/suspension/beetle-and-ghia/ball-joint-poly-grease-seals.html

You will need to trim the steel bushing with a hack saw, sawzall or die grinder to make it flush with the rubber piece.

I started roughing in the front beam and air ride today and have a few questions.
First, Do I need to purchase torsion arm seals or do the delrin bushing do this for me? If not is this space alright?
http://airkewld.com/images/fbfiles/images/bushing_space.jpg

Second, what do I have to do to make the front shock fit the the lower torsion arm. The bolt does not pass through the shock at all to catch a nut?

Hey flipflop, the rear IRS kit here will work. i had bought my entire kit last april when they still had air cylinders for sale in a kit for the supers. With some modification i should be able to get em in and i'll try to keep you posted if you want to follow along.

Airkewld, if i get the front installed, where you recommend the best spot to throw some pics up for fellow SB owners looking to get their supers on air. i'd gladly post cuz im a picture nut for reference. i will also scan the instruction if i can tomorrow and PM them over.

Hey Pete, i actually found the old printup for the installation. Luckily i had printed it all off over a year ago when i was trying to decide which kits to go with. So thanks for the help! If you need a copy of it for any one else let me know and i can scan it in. Even though i'm was prolly the only one looking for it cuz im the rare person trying to air ride a SB. lol But it might give insight on how to mod a strut suspension.

I see that my beam is being shipped today. However, in reviewing the UPS shipping documents, I see it is being shipped "ground". In a previous message you said that because of many delays on the beam, you were going to ship it "2-day Air" and allow me $50 credit for other sales from you. What happened?

Something else is up. Do you have lock nuts on each side? I have never had to say this, but you could lock light it but they jam it so t can not move. Can you take a picture of each side or maybe a mobile video?

Yes - the lock nut keeps loosening. Even after I put the beam in the vise and crank the nut so hard that the workbench moves.

I have the swing axle kit installed. Trouble is that one of the heim bolts keeps moving inside of the beam which results in the beam twisting and that side of the car sitting down an inch more than the other. I tried removing the beam assembly, readjusting the heim bolt and locking it down again with the nut. However, it continues to move under load.

Do you have a recommended fix for this? I was thinking I could drill and tap an 8mm hole through the beam going about 6 mm into the heim bolt and then thread in a 8mm bolt to hold it from shifting. See 3D model below.

Thoughts?

So I sold my entire front beam with steering box, tie rods....drum brake to drum brake....why keep it?! I was getting me a narrowed front beam...

Well now I have to buy all the little stuff in the middle....and that is fine...i want to be sure i have new stuff in good shape for this project...

Question: buying new camber adjusters, should I buy this set from CIP1 that appear to be suited for lowered rides?

So our good friends from Scott's VW Werks in Colorado sent us a 68-71 Bay bus spindle for us to design a set of brakes for the front of it. After mocking everything up, we have found that all we need to make is a inner seal race for our 64-67 Type 2 Bus kit to fit it. We are prototyping it now and we will let you know when its done. More to come shortly.

Help all, i purchased an air ride kit for my 71 SB last april and it includes the front end air system part number ark-4004 (air cyclinders, upper strut mounts, lower strut extenders, expansion chambers). I believe this setup to be discontinued because i can find no information on it in either the new or old website. Looking for the built thread because i recall it needing me to do some cutting of my old strut mounts etc and need to know the correct steps. If any have the instructions or any info that would be great! Otherwise right now i am stuck with a slammed IRS and a front end hanging up there!

Looks good and you want to tighten it like a wheel bearing, tight, then back it off a 1/4 turn. I might be inclined to clearance the arm instead of installing the bushings when it looks that good. Then just touch the arm up with a small brush. What do you think?

So through rods are in! trying to figure out the air ride bushing and air shock clearance...see other thread.

a couple quick questions on the through rods...how tight should i tighten the bolt to the washers? i figure the collar bolt is to just hold things in place. but i assume i would not want to over tighten right?

so i got the arms in and the through rods connected. first attempt - no bushings....mock up with the air shocks, spindle in place enough for arm position...doesn't look like i will have the clearance....try with bushings next...would you agree?

also...with the delrin bushings...i need not worry about torsion seals correct? i did shoot in some axle grease thru the zerts and it did bush out around the delrins....

Thanks for your help on the phone. I have run into a new problem, is it possible that the piece inside the beam is put in backwards? I want to raise the car up some but there is no adjustment left and if I rotate to the other hole it puts the control arms in almost a vertical position ( 12 O clock). It seems to me if the piece in the beam were rotated 180 degrees and reinstalled, I would have alot of upward adjustment. Any help would be appreciated. Ray.Winchester@Getrag.De

Pete, I need a realistic update on my beam which has been in powdercoating for 3 weeks or so, and on order for 4 months. I understand and appreciate your goal for impecable quality, but didn't realize the lead time would be quite this long. When can I expect this puppy..................

When replacing a clutch cable in an Air Cooled VW, make sure you apply grease to the cable as you slide it through the tube. This is a common mistake when replacing the cable and will greatly improve the life expectancy of the cable. Normal bearing or axle grease will do. More to come later.

Pete, after our conversation this morning, I took more material off the tops of the bearing caps and everything seems to be working at this point. That seemed to take care of the problem.

Thanks for the emergency brake picture and Thanks for taking the time this morning to talk about and work out my issue.

PS--you were right about the bearing caps, my salvage guy here in OKC says there are several different bearing caps.

All Beetle/Ghia drop spindles, regardless of who makes them, add .375" (3/8") of added track to each side of the vehicle. Whether the company writes 1/4" or Zero offset, it is 3/8". Drum or disc application, Link pin or Ball joint application, they are all the same. Cast or forged, offset is .375".

Old welded spindles could be .500" or 1/2" but nothing that is sold as new or looks forged or cast is 3/8".

CB Performance, EMPI, AC Industries, Century, Airkewld or CIP1, all are the same.

More tips later, thanks for checking out the tip of the day!

Yes, the bearing spacer is in place on the back side of the spacer.

Ok, cool. You have the latest rear hubs we produce. The amount of protrusion is correct as well. Are the bearing caps original? My next step would be the bearing caps as everything esle looks good unless the compression of the axle nut makes the axle bearing move inwards. Meaning a spacer could be missing behind the bearing. Pics are always good. Let me know.

As far as the hub, there is not indentation, meaing where it meets the spacer, it is flat. They are also Rancho Axles. When everything is bolted on, the last chromolly spacer protrudes out of the bearing cap about 1/8th inch.

It is my understand that there is 2 styles of bearing caps. 64-65-66 have the one with the oil weep hole. Up to 63 had the cao that the seal drives in from the outside and looks to be quite a bit thinner. Should I try and get a set of those bearing caps??

Lol, Indentation, not identification. Is it recessed for the spacer or not? Did rancho supply the axles? Can you tame a side profile picture to see how much of the spacer actually protrudes outside the bearing cap?
Can you text a picture if that is easier?

There is not any identification numbers on the hub. I purchased the trans from Rancho and the axle tubes are stock. The correct thin spacer is on the back side of the bearing. On the front side of the bearing (per Chilton Manual) is the washer, O-ring, thick washer, then your required chromolly O-ring. As is said, i surfaced the bearing cap and it rubs the hub. The other side worked, but it is very close.

I did everything like the instructions show but it seems that my ARK beam is too long. The two forward heim joints are pushed forward and do not hang straight down like in the pictures. I don't know if the 56' chassis is shorter in the rear where the kit mounts. I need to know if I am doing something wrong before I take the ARK beams to a machine shop and have shortened. All heim joints are screwed as far in as they will go. Front bracket is tacked in place where it should be and rear was attached to outer side of lower shock mount. Any info would be great!

Some do it for camber reasons. Some do it for travel reason. If you have an early model, stick with a swing axle because it will devalue the car and you loos the ability to fit cooler wheels on your ride. IRS add;s about 1 inch to each side just doing the conversion. I hope this helps!

Test fit the shocks with out the delrin bushings on and see if you have adequate clearence for the shocks to move up and down. If you do, leave them off. If you don't, you will need to install them.

Ball Joint front. Narrowed Beam.
I have searched the site and cannot find any pictures or instructions so I have to ask this question. I purchased all the parts for a full air ride in the front. My narrowed beam came with Delrin Bushings inserted in the tubes but I also have these 4 donut looking Delrin Bushings. Do these go on the control arms? See pictures for reference and let me know if I am right or wrong.

Thanks for posting Shawn. When installing these through rods, as they are tightened down, they are self centering. Because you are dialing in thrust left to right, something that centers it could be useful as your tightening it down but becomes useless once it is tight. I have had some cats, weld the first washer to the trailing arm and smooth it out but if we keep adding things, the more turning radius we will loose. I hope this helps. Ask away on any other questions.
