    Mack's Polo project: v2

I know airkewld is primarily about - well, figure it out – but I’m sure I’m not alone in my appreciation of the watercooled scene as well. I’ve had a few water pumpers as dailies/ and parts haulers but I always had a hankering for a watercooled toy as my aircooled projects are all way off completion.

About a year ago, I picked up a cheap mk2 polo hatchback. I don’t think it was sold in the states, but looks like this:

    Stock polo

I got it mainly to teach a couple of my friends some welding and bodywork skills without having to let them loose on my split bus. Whilst tooling around in it, I realised what a fun, simple little car it was to play with. Whilst my original intention was to make this a shoestring resto and upgrade, the seeds were now sown to take the humble “breadvan” down a more kustom route.

I joined a few forums and began collecting parts off the GT and G40 (supercharged) models. Then a polo hatch was featured in Fast Car magazine
    magazine cover

    www.fastcar.co.uk/
which gave me even more inspiration and a shopping list running into hundreds of pounds…

    And so it began.

    New project: Konzept Drei

    Konzept Drei.

Hi, this was the start in 2009. I picked the 67' up in a small little town. The locally assembled VWs are way different than in the rest of of the World.  Only in South Africa....

    Safely at the new home.

This was the only year we had ball joint and disk brakes in SA, but no 4 link IRS.  It then reverted back to Link pin and stayed with the swing arm rear till 1979 when production was halted.

This car had an engine fire and the rear was badly damaged. This was partially repaired by the previous owner.

Now more on this project. The essence of the beetle and its lines and proprtions will be kept intact. Things to be done:

    • Roof chop
    • Air ride front and rear
    • Chromed beam
    • Front seats moved back by 8"
    • Pedals moved back by 8" and converted to hydraulic clutch
    • Rear seat shortened by same
    • New dash build with center console
    • Heads up display
    • Rev counter with LCD display
    • Data logging system with new digital instruments
    • New CAN bus wiring harness with key fob remote
    • Integrated ICE and GPS navigation
    • LED rear lights
    •  HID's
    • Two tone paint with pinstripe
    • 2.3L Type4 Fuel injected motor
    • IRS 4 link rear conversion
    • and quite a few more things ;)

    More to follow.....

As the month closes for us, we are finally catching up on our fabrication orders. It has been almost 2 years since we have been this close. 16 Ultimate beams are left, our goal is to get them as close to done this week as possible. The mad dash to being caught up is upon us, the labor day sale is 7 days away!

The Garage got some TLC! Check out the new comment and like buttons on each item. Pretty trick. Let's hear what you think! More to come later, enjoy your week everyone!

Airkewld_Smoothie_Client_1Jason H, out on the east coat, Florida to be exact, has been a customer for a while. Purchasing small items here and there when he hits me up on when the 17" Smoothies will be finished. Lucky for him, I was going to hear back from the testing lab in a couple of days. He sent me a couple pics of the bus and what he was after.

Old Speed hooked up the suspension with a narrowed beam/drop spindle combo up front and a straight axle kit in the rear with disc brakes all the way around.

Stock bus WheelsThe plan is to powder coat these wheels the off white to match the bumpers that are receiving a new coat of paint the factory L82, silver white similar to these wheels to the right. He is opting for the chrome BIG logo caps and chrome trim rings with a staggered fitment. It's gonna be a double cab double take, that's for sure!

Before and afters will be a must for this sick ride!

One of my good clients James J. out of MD hits me up at the 2010 Classic in Irvine about the release of the Smoothies. He talks to me about the wife's Ghia and what the plans were, on air, skirts, the whole nine. To finish it off, the 17" Smoothies. They opt for a raw set so he can paint match them to the car with early small caps in a staggered fitment. No lip up front and a fat lip in the rear. This Ghia is gonna be sick! Stay tuned for pics on this one!

SmoothiesOur 17" Smoothies got DOT approved over the weekend and we could not be more stoked. Now we’ll get started on James and Jason wheels that are both going for a custom powder coated finish. Check out the Custom VW Blogs in the Garage for builds on these. Heck, tell us what you think of them, we would love to hear your thoughts!

So more cool stuff is planned for this week, some stainless steel brake lines get made, 5 more beams are going out and maybe, just maybe, some more kewl videos. Until next time, keep it low, keep it kewl and keep it safe. <!--41c7b5ad66bf4649a0efbd25abea364b-->
