I am saving pennies for the "real" rims I want to buy, but in the meantime, my bug still needs to look cool. So after a considerable amount of research I found that white wall tires are pricy which was money I could be saving for my 17 inch Escra's. I looked into porto-wall inserts (also seemed a little high priced for a quick white wall fix). Finally I settled on painting my own white walls.
I know, I read a thousand blogs that said "DON'T DO IT!" But there were a few souls out there that had great success. Given my notorious attention to detail, and having the reputation for being a stickler for the standard (habit from the military I guess) I figured I should give it a shot.
There are a few high priced rubber based paints out there designed specifically for white wall painting but I couldn’t wait for them to be shipped from Iceland! So I set out on a quest to find the best paint in the old U.S.A. Multiple hardware stores and auto parts stores later I found some Rustoleum flexible vinyl paint designed to be used on seats, dashboards, etc. It said it resists fading and is guaranteed not to crack, peel, or blister even under twisting and contortion.
I meticulously prepared my tires by cleaning and masking off the appropriate areas and I got to work. The result is remarkable! They look outstanding. I’ll let you know how it holds up after a few hundred miles. In the meantime, $5.99 a can won’t put a dent in my rim fund.
