Years ago, I wrote an article on what to do after you buy your Classic VW project. It’s still live today in the
LEARN section of our website—and honestly, it’s more relevant now than ever.
Yesterday, I was watching a restoration series from a guy in Washington, @dvniemela, rebuilding a ’91 Acura NSX. He started with an engine swap, painted the rear half of the car, added twin turbos… only to discover something shocking later on.
The left front wheel sat inches closer to the driver’s door than it should have.
After digging deeper, he found the car had been in a major accident and was “repaired” with a ton of shoddy work long before he owned it. None of it was obvious at first glance.
This lesson needs to be mainstream.
Before the excitement kicks in and your eyes get bigger than your budget, you must measure, inspect, and question everything. Too many projects look like a steal—until you’re broke halfway through the build or worse, the car sits untouched in the garage for decades because it was more than you could realistically take on.
Not every car is right for you.
Not every deal is a good deal.
The right projects are worth investing in. The ones that seem “too good to be true” usually are.
