⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - "Your steering deserves better—OEM PRObuilt Boxes replace failure-prone aftermarket units with lifetime reliability and true VW quality." - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Trusted by 100’s of clients with 5-star reviews.

One of the most overlooked components of the Classic Volkswagen drivetrain is the steering box. The OEM part number 113415061C was the most widely used box and fits all Ball Joint-equipped Type 1’s, Type 3’s, and Type 181’s.

Unfortunately, the factory adjustment screw on top of the steering box is often overused. While the box accounts for about 40% of steering wheel play (or “creep”), it’s far from the only culprit. In fact, many factors across the entire steering system affect how your VW feels on the road.

What Contributes to Steering Play?

  • Steering wheel to shaft connection (torque spec)

  • Shaft to male steering tee (torque spec)

  • Rag joint (quality + torque spec)

  • Steering box adjustment (set to PRO spec)

  • Beam, pitman/drop arm, and tie rod connections (torque + deflection)

  • Steering dampener condition

  • Tie rod end quality (not all “new” parts are equal)

  • Control arm engagement with bushings/bearings

  • Ball joints or king/link pins depending on front end type

  • Wheel bearings, lug torque, tire pressure, and load rating

It’s eye-opening how many details add up to create your steering feel. The box matters, but it’s only one piece of the equation.

FAQ

Do I need to fill it with grease?
No. It’s pre-filled with the correct amount of Corn Head grease.

Can I adjust it if I feel play?
Not right away. First, audit all other steering connections—play is most often caused by overlooked torque specs or worn parts. If everything checks out and play remains, call us first: 1-623-518-3537.

What about my old steering box?
If it has the VW logo and matches this style, send it in through our [Core Program]. We do not accept TRW, Ampri, or aftermarket brands.

Dealing with Airkewld has been great. Not only is the product beyond my expectations in terms of quality, appearance and function, Pete sent me a personal note and a phone call to discuss my personal needs. Will be using Airkewld for my '67 Bug in the present and the future. I purchased a PRO Steering Box. Awesome!!!

  • Worth EVERY penny - Steering Box 5

1967 Type 1 fully (almost) rebuilt. After months of experiencing less than optimal performance from a very old steering box I pulled the trigger on a PRObuilt Steering Box - 2480. I say to anyone contemplating the replacement of your steering, don't hesitate. Installation fairly easy if you have any skill. Performance of the PRObuilt box...TIP TOP - like driving a new car. Two finger steering instead of bicep pushes around a corner. Then damn thing just works like it is suppose to. Top quality build and instructions are good. Anyway - I rate this addition to my build as one of the best...
