02 · Plan
Before you change wheels
New wheels on a classic VW are a fitment job, not just a purchase. Work through these four decisions first — the Wheel Tech guide covers the math.
1
Bolt pattern
Get there one of two ways: disc brakes with the bolt pattern you need, or blank drums drilled and studded to it. We don't recommend adapters.
2
Backspacing & offset
Measure the wheel's backspacing, then work out how far it sits from the fender. This decides whether it fits.
3
Track width
Drop spindles and disc brakes each push the wheel out about 0.375". A narrowed beam pulls it back in — wider fenders are the other route.
4
Size
Stay at 7"–7.5" wide and no bigger than 18" in diameter. Go past that and chassis parts wear out faster.
Smoothie wheels come in 17" rim sets for 4x130mm, 5x112/130mm and 5x205mm bolt patterns, including 3-piece PRObuilt versions. See all wheels →
