Air Shocks on a Classic Beetle or Ghia: What Actually Works

Twenty-five years of chassis R&D on link pin, ball joint, swing axle, and IRS applications — the straight answer on what an air shock can and can’t do, front and rear.

Air shocks first showed up on Beetles and Ghias in the late 1990s and early 2000s as a budget-minded form of air ride. Twenty-five years later, what we’ve learned is simple: air shocks only deliver a good ride — and a long service life — when they’re paired with the right supporting components. On their own, they fight the chassis instead of working with it.

Why Air Shocks Don’t Bolt Straight Onto a Stock Beam

Out of the box, there is no air shock that bolts onto a stock OEM beam from shock mount to shock mount. Both link pin and ball joint beams have the same problem: the shock body rubs the trailing arm and/or the beam tower before it ever gets the chance to work.

The Fix: Beam Geometry — Not the Shock Itself

Update the beam to an Airkewld beam — where the towers are taller and tilted back — and that gap opens up enough for an air shock to clear the arm and the tower.

On a link pin beam, relocating the upper shock mount to the same position used on an Airkewld beam gets the same result: the shock bolts on clean, with no rubbing.

On a ball joint beam, we replace the factory arm seal with a Delrin seal spacer just over double the factory thickness. That extra thickness alone creates the clearance an air shock needs to function without rubbing.

Why We Also Eliminate the Torsion Bars

Running air shocks while keeping the factory torsion bars creates a tug-of-war between the air spring and the torsion leaf slats, and ride quality suffers for it. That’s why our kits use through rods that eliminate the torsion slats entirely, letting each arm move independently so the car rides solely on air.

Bottom line: air shocks aren’t a standalone product on a front beam. It takes a system — the right beam geometry, the right mount location or spacer, and through rods — to get a result worth having. Our front kits build that whole system around a factory OEM beam, so it stays simple to install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bolt air shocks straight onto my stock VW front beam?
No. Both link pin and ball joint beams will rub the arm and/or the beam tower unless the beam geometry (or an equivalent mount relocation or spacer) creates clearance first.
Do air shocks work on a swing axle or IRS rear suspension?
No. There is no rear air shock that bolts on and does the job people expect — you either preload the suspension into a harsh ride, or the shock rubs and fails once it's deflated.
What's the difference between an air shock and an air ride kit?
An air shock is a single component that still fights the factory torsion bars. An air ride kit is a full system — beam or axle geometry, correct mounting, and through rods that remove the torsion slats — built to ride solely on air.
Do Airkewld's air ride kits require welding?
Yes. Our front and rear air ride kits are weld-on kits. If welding isn't an option for your build, air ride isn't a realistic upgrade path right now.
If I just want a little more ride height, what should I do?
Adjust your torsion bars. It's the simplest way to gain or lose about an inch without introducing the ride-quality problems that come with bolt-on air shocks.
