As of 2026, no vendor in the world reproduces the 1955–1967 VW Type 2 Bus steering box. None. If your original ATE or ZF box is worn out, rebuilding it is the only path forward — and nobody takes that rebuild further than we do.

This is not an outright purchase. It's a professional rebuild of your box, tagged to you the moment it arrives and returned to you when it's finished. Forty years of steering box experience, every unit built the same way.

Need your bus back on the road now? Our Steering Box Exchange ships a rebuilt box to you today — your core comes back to us afterward, in the case we send. See the Exchange →

Choose your finish

  • Raw $1,755.55The complete rebuild, finished bare. Column sandblasted, case sandblasted and machined. Choose this if you're matching a custom restoration, doing your own coating, or building a car where our finish isn't your finish.
  • Powder Coat $1,955.55Everything in Raw, plus the correct factory finish. Column pressed out and coated Silver Beige (Deluxe) or Satin Black (Standard); case coated Satin Black. Same price either way — you're choosing what your bus left the factory with, not paying for an upgrade.

What gets done

Every box is tagged to its owner and fully disassembled down to the last piece. Then:

Component Raw Powder Coat
Steering Column Sandblasted, new shaft bearing Pressed out, sandblasted, powder coated Silver Beige or Satin Black, new shaft bearing
Case Sandblasted, cross-hatched on bearing surfaces, deburred, tapped Same, plus powder coated Satin Black
Cover Cleaned, tumbled, threads chased Restored where possible
Thrust Plate Upgraded thicker steel black-zinc plate, countersunk hardware, bump ridges for clearance Same
Shaft & Worm Gear Inspected, polished, threads chased, trued if needed. New spring, cotter key, nut Same
Horn Wire Brand new, routed through the guard, OEM crimped both ends Same
Roller & Worm Audited and reused if serviceable Same
Hardware All new stainless fasteners, gaskets, seals Same
Mount (if sent) Cleaned and blasted Same

That thrust plate is not a reproduction of the original — thicker steel, black-zinc coated, countersunk hardware, and bump ridges we added for clearance. Better than what left Wolfsburg.

No surprise invoices. Ever.

Your roller and worm are audited, not automatically replaced — reused if they're within spec, and most are. If something is beyond repair, here's exactly what happens: we photograph it, we call you, and nothing gets ordered until you say go. No work proceeds and no parts are purchased without your approval. You will never open an invoice you weren't expecting.

Shipping, both ways, included

  • 1. Label to youPrepaid and insured, so you can send us your core without paying a cent at the counter.
  • 2. Packed by the PROsProfessional packaging protecting your steering shaft threads in both directions.
  • 3. Back to your doorFree insured return shipping, lower 48. Outside that, call us for a quote before ordering.

The fine print, in plain English

  • Fits 1955–1967 Type 2 Bus steering boxes only. ATE or ZF, Deluxe or Standard.
  • Your box returns dry — fill with steering box oil before use.
  • Cores are inspected on arrival. If a component is unserviceable, you hear from us before any work begins.
  • Two-year warranty on workmanship. If anything we did isn't right, it comes back to us and we fix it.
  • Send your mount if you have it — it gets cleaned and blasted at no extra charge.

Why the PRO's

A handful of shops in the country will rebuild one of these. Ask them what happens to your cover, your thrust plate, your horn wire. Ask if the column comes out of the case. Ask what the hardware is made of.

The table above is the answer to every one of those questions, and it's why this box will outlast the bus it goes into.
