5Install & Steering Play
The box ships bolt-in ready. Before you blame any steering box for play, audit everything that contributes to steering feel:
- Steering wheel to shaft connection (torque spec)
- Shaft to male steering tee (torque spec)
- Rag joint (quality + torque spec)
- Steering box adjustment (set to PRO spec)
- Beam, pitman/drop arm and tie rod connections (torque + deflection)
- Steering dampener condition
- Tie rod end quality (not all "new" parts are equal)
- Control arm engagement with bushings/bearings
- Ball joints or king/link pins, depending on front end type
- Wheel bearings, lug torque, tire pressure and load rating

- 1962–1968 pitman/drop arm if you're upgrading from a pre-'61 box.
- OEM PRObuilt Rag Joint for a fresh, reliable connection.
- Full steering system audit: tie rods, dampener, control arms and ball joints.
7FAQ
What's the difference between ECObuilt and PRObuilt?
The internals are identical, including the brand-new worm gear and roller shaft. The PRObuilt adds a powder coated case and the Airkewld billet top cap, which is 40% tougher than factory. If your VW sees potholes, curbs, dirt or race duty, go PRObuilt.
Do I need to fill it with grease?
No. It's pre-filled with the correct amount of Corn Head Grease.
Can I adjust it if I feel play?
Not right away. Audit the entire steering system first; play usually comes from overlooked torque specs or worn parts. If everything checks out and play remains, call us first: 1-623-518-3537.
What about my old steering box?
If it has the VW logo cast into the case and matches the 113 415 061 C style, send it in through our Core Parts Program. We don't accept TRW, Ampri or other aftermarket boxes.
