PRObuilt vs ECObuilt Ball Joint Arms: Which Set Belongs On Your Beetle?
Same arms. Same German ball joints. Same QC. So what actually separates the two Airkewld arm sets — and which one should ride under your 1966–1977 Beetle, Ghia, or Baja?
Functionally, the two sets are the same. Both are rebuilt OEM VW arms with the same German ball joints, pressed and pre-broken-in to the same spec. The difference is finish, hardware extras, and presentation. PRObuilt arrives satin black powder coated, fully dressed, and packaged for showroom delivery. ECObuilt skips the cosmetics so you can save some cash — just plan to paint or coat the arms before they go on the car so they don't rust.
1The Foundation Both Sets Share
Before we talk about what's different, it's worth understanding what's the same, because the things both sets share are the things that actually keep you and your family planted on the road. Every Airkewld arm set — whether it ends up wearing a satin black powder coat or a raw factory finish — starts with the same four OEM VW Type 1 ball-joint arms:
These are genuine VW cores, not reproductions. They're sourced, sorted, and audited before they ever hit our bench. From there, both PRObuilt and ECObuilt go through an identical inspection and rebuild process: bushings are checked, ball joints are pressed in fresh, and every arm is QC-stamped before it's allowed into a kit. The German ball joints we use are deliberately chosen — they're the closest thing you can buy today to the durability the factory shipped with in 1973.
2The Two Builds, Side By Side
Raw ECObuilt arms will rust if you don't protect them. Before installation they need paint, a clear coat, undercoating, or whatever finish you prefer. A rattle can of satin black and 20 minutes on a Saturday and you're protected. The math still works out in your favor, especially if you've got the supplies sitting in the garage already.
3Head-to-Head Comparison
Here's exactly where the two sets are identical and where they differ. If a row is green on both sides, that feature is included regardless of which set you buy.
Six rows of "both YES." Three rows of cosmetic and convenience extras on the PRO side. That's the whole story.
4Which One Should You Buy?
The honest answer: a lot of customers don't need PRObuilt for the mechanical outcome — both sets drive identically. The deciding factor is almost always finish, time, and how visible the arms will be on the finished car. If you'd be painting them anyway because of color matching or theme, ECObuilt makes obvious sense. If the car is going on a rotisserie next month and you want it perfect out of the box, PRObuilt is the easy answer.
5The Core Return Program
Whether you order PRObuilt or ECObuilt, your old arms are worth real money. We accept cores on every kit we sell — as long as the arms don't have bearing wear. Here's how it works:
- Prepaid shipping label. We send a label with your new kit. No paying out of pocket to ship your cores back.
- Drop at any UPS location. Pack the old arms in the supplied box, slap the label on, and drop them off.
- $85 rebate per set for cores in good condition.
The core program is the same regardless of which set you bought. It's our way of keeping good VW cores out of the scrap pile and back into circulation — and putting some of that value back in your pocket.
6Install Confidence: Same Procedure, Either Set
One thing worth calling out for anyone planning to do this in their own garage: the install procedure is identical for both sets. The bushings, geometry, and torque specs are the same. If you can install one, you can install the other. There's no "PRObuilt is easier" or "ECObuilt is trickier." They're the same arm with a different finish.
Either kit ships with our reference install guide (AK-CA-001), which covers the full sequence: removal of the old arms, transferring eccentrics, installing the new arms onto the torsion bars, setting the spindle, and the absolutely critical step of dialing the upper ball-joint eccentric to a true 90 degrees.
7Bottom Line
If you've made it this far, you already have your answer. PRObuilt and ECObuilt are the same arm set under the skin. One arrives ready to bolt on and stay looking great forever. The other arrives ready for a coat of your favorite finish and saves you some money for the rest of your build. Both come with the same German ball joints, the same OEM cores, the same QC, the same $85 core rebate program, and the same install procedure.
Pick the finish that fits the car. Either way, you're getting Airkewld's full attention on the part of the front end that keeps you pointed where you're steering.
