⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "They built on the box that came on my car in 1966. Same casting, same date code, and it steers better than anything I've driven." ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Your box doesn't become a core.
It becomes the platform.
The Client Build Service
We've said no to this for 10 years.
Every week somebody asks if we'll rebuild the box that came on their car instead of buying one of ours. For about a decade, the answer has been no.
Not because we couldn't. Because we tear down a hundred boxes at a time, and a batch of one doesn't fit on an assembly line. Doing it halfway wasn't worth our name on it, so we didn't do it at all.
We finally figured out how to do it right. Not faster. Not cheaper. Right.
5 Client Builds a month. That's all we can do, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
What this is
Normally, when you send us a steering box, it goes into the Core Program. It gets torn down with ninety-nine others, the good components get audited into inventory, and the casting goes back out in someone else's car.
A Client Build is the opposite of that.
Your box never enters the core pool. It goes on a bench with your name on the work order, and it becomes the platform we build on — your casting, your part number, your date code, the numbers that left Wolfsburg on your car.
You get that casting back, built to the same spec, on the same bench jig, by the same people who build every box that leaves this shop.
Choose your spec
You already know these names. Same specs — built on your platform.
ECO Spec
Client Build | ECO spec
$900
- Your case prepped, sanded, and corrected for flaws
- Your worm gear and roller shaft audited, reconditioned, and tested
- New seals, hardware, and bearings installed
- Packed with lifetime Corn Head Grease
- Bench-tested and adjusted to Airkewld spec
One condition, stated up front. Your worm gear and roller shaft have to pass audit to be reconditioned. Most do. If yours doesn't, we'll show you the measurements and you can move up to PRO spec for the difference — or we'll send it back and refund everything but the teardown. You will never get a surprise invoice from us.
PRO Spec · Recommended
Client Build | PRO spec
$1,200
Everything above, plus nothing left to chance:
- New VW worm gear & roller shaft — no audit, no condition, no maybe
- New roller bearings
- Billet top — 30% stronger than stock
- OEM VW worm adjuster + nut
- New seals & stainless hardware
- Greaseable zerks installed
- Your case bench ground, die ground, seal openings barrel-sanded, masked and powder coated
- Adjusters gun-blued, sharpened worm serrations, filled for life
We could recondition a 55-year-old worm gear at this level. We don't. Nobody should be steering a car on a worn wear part, and we won't put a lifetime warranty behind one.
PRO spec is a flat price and there is nothing that can change it. Whatever your box needs, it's in the number.
What stays yours
The case. Your casting, your part number, your date code — cleaned up better than the day it was cast, and back under your car.
And your old parts come home too. Whatever we replace gets bagged, tagged, and packed in the box with the finished unit. Proof of what we did, and yours to keep.
Both specs include insured shipping in both directions.
Is my box eligible?
- Yes: genuine OEM VW castings with the VW logo — 113415061C and equivalents, fitting Type 1, Type 3, and Type 181
- No: TRW, Ampri, or any aftermarket unit. We won't put our name on someone else's casting.

Before you book, read this part.
Your steering box is responsible for roughly 40% of steering wheel play. It is not responsible for the other 60%.
This is the most important thing on this page. A perfect box in a car with a tired front end still feels loose — and we would rather tell you that now than after you've paid us.
What else contributes to steering play:
- Steering wheel to shaft connection (torque spec)
- Shaft to male steering tee (torque spec)
- Rag joint (quality + torque spec)
- Steering box adjustment (set to PRO spec)
- Beam, pitman/drop arm, and tie rod connections (torque + deflection)
- Steering dampener condition
- Tie rod end quality — not all "new" parts are equal
- Control arm engagement with bushings and bearings
- Ball joints, or king and link pins, depending on your front end
- Wheel bearings, lug torque, tire pressure, and load rating
It's eye-opening how many details add up to create steering feel. The box matters. It's one piece of the equation.
Call before you book and we'll walk your whole front end with you. If the box isn't your problem, we'll say so and you'll keep your money.
How it works
- Book your slot. 5 a month. When they're gone, they're gone until next month.
- We send you a prepaid shipping label.
- Teardown and documentation. We photograph your unit as it comes apart and log every component.
- Build and bench setup to the spec you chose.
- Home in 30 days, measured from the day your box lands on our dock.
Who this is for
The guy who wants the casting that came on his car — original numbers, original date code — steering better than it did new, and doesn't want to think about it again for the rest of his life.
Who it isn't for: if you want great steering for the least money in the least time, buy a PRObuilt or an ECObuilt. Same specs, same bench jig, ships this week, costs less, and there's nothing wrong with it. It just won't have your numbers on it. We'll tell you that on the phone before we'll take your money.
FAQ
Do I get my original parts back?
Yes. Bagged and tagged, in the box.
Why does this cost more than buying a box off the shelf?
Because a PRObuilt is built a hundred at a time and yours is built once, by one person, with your name on the work order.
Do I need to fill it with grease?
No. It's pre-filled with the correct amount of Corn Head grease. No service required in your lifetime.
Can I adjust it if I feel play?
Not right away. First audit every other steering connection — play is most often caused by overlooked torque specs or worn parts elsewhere. If everything checks out and play remains, call us first: 1-623-518-3537.
What if my box can't be saved?
Once in a while a case is cracked or worn past what can be brought back. It's rare. You'll hear it from us with photos, not a bill.
