The clutch tube inside every Classic VW eventually rattles loose from its bracket. The Airkewld Chassis Inspection Plate Kit ends the hose-clamp hack — for good.

Process — Not Parts — Determines Performance

For decades the fix for a loose clutch tube was a hole saw, an air chisel, and a hose clamp or zip tie wrapped around the tube blind. That is a hack. This is the fix.

The Chassis Inspection Plate Kit gives you a clean, sealed, removable window into the tunnel directly opposite the pedal assembly. Cut the rectangle once, mount the plate, and the most service-hungry spot on the car opens up to you forever. A clutch cable swap that used to mean pulling the pedal cluster — one hour, four-letter words, knuckle blood — becomes a five-minute job for the rest of the car's life. Need to re-anchor a loose clutch tube? Reach in, weld it correctly, screw the plate back down.

60 → 5 Min Clutch Cable Swap
All Years Type 1 + Type 3 Fitment
1:1 Template Print & Cut Included

Why It Works

  • Direct access vs. blind fishing. See the clutch cable and the tube bracket with your own eyes. No more reaching through a hole saw scar with a flashlight in your teeth.
  • Five-minute clutch cable service. Pop the cover, swap the cable, screw the plate back on. Pedal assembly stays where it is.
  • Sealed when not in use. Cover plate overlaps the cutout by 1/2″ on every side — road grime stays out of the tunnel.
  • Fixes loose clutch tubes correctly. If the bracket has rattled out, you can reach in and weld it back where it belongs — no hose clamp, no zip tie.
  • Invisible under carpet. Plate sits flush with the tunnel. Once the carpet goes back down, no one knows it is there but you.
  • One-time cut. Lifetime access. Every future service through this opening is faster than the last one.

What's Included

  • Inspection cover plate — 5″ × 4 1/2″ steel, sized for 1/2″ overlap on every side of the cutout
  • (4) Phillips self-tapping screws — bite directly into the tunnel sheet metal
  • Printed Quick Reference Guide (AK-CH-001, 3 pages) including the 1:1 cut template — print at 100% and lay it directly onto the tunnel
  • QR code on the printed guide scans straight to the full web install guide — videos, photos, troubleshooting

Install — Done Right the First Time

We built two install resources because process is what determines performance. Use either. Use both. Print the 1:1 template at actual size, verify the 1″ reference square measures exactly 1.000″ before you mark any metal, and you will land the cutout square the first time.

Top 5 Install Mistakes — Skip These

  • Cutting without measuring twice. Mark all four lines from the chassis references — floor pan and firewall — not from carpet or trim. Lay the rectangle out with a Sharpie before any tool touches metal.
  • Drilling corners without center-punching. Step bits walk on smooth steel. Center-punch each corner first — skip this and the radii end up off-center, the rectangle goes crooked, and the cover plate will not sit flush.
  • Skipping the deburr. Sharp edges from the cutoff wheel will catch carpet, fingers, and the clutch cable. File or sand every edge AFTER cutting and BEFORE priming.
  • Stripping screws. The (4) supplied Phillips screws self-tap into the tunnel. Use a drill MOTOR — not an impact — and keep pressure on each screw or you will cam out and strip the head before it bites.
  • Welding the clutch tube hot. The clutch tube is thin-wall. If the bracket is loose, tack first then finish-weld in short low-heat passes. Burn through and you have replaced a $5 fix with a $200 cable run.

  • VW tunnel hole cover 5

Posted by Michael Zsutty on Aug 14th 2025

The cover is great it is curved to fit the curvature of the tunnel for a snug fit. I already had one installed where I had to cut a hole for the front clutch tube weld and bought this one to cover the hole I had to cut to gain access to the center weld. The only problem is that I didn't want to wait for the cover to arrive to start cutting out the thick insulation that is attached over the entire tunnel. I didn't want to lift up the carpet and footrest to get the covers dimensions. I called and one of the pros answered but when I asked him the dimensions of the plate so I could get started he said he didn't know them and was unwilling to find out for me. So I had to take everything out and measure the front plate in order to get started.
