A remedy recommended for many Classic Volkswagens is the clutch tube coming loose from the stationary bracket inside the chassis tunnel. For years, the hole saw, air chisel, was used to cut open the chassis and hose clamp or zip tie the tube back to the bracket. Now, you can fix it correctly with the Chassis Inspection Plate Kit. Cutting and welding are needed to do this job perfectly.

This is the second one I installed. They make it very easy to address any problems you might have within the tunnel. I recommend this item to all.

  • VW tunnel hole cover 5

Posted by Michael Zsutty on Aug 14th 2025

The cover is great it is curved to fit the curvature of the tunnel for a snug fit. I already had one installed where I had to cut a hole for the front clutch tube weld and bought this one to cover the hole I had to cut to gain access to the center weld. The only problem is that I didn't want to wait for the cover to arrive to start cutting out the thick insulation that is attached over the entire tunnel. I didn't want to lift up the carpet and footrest to get the covers dimensions. I called and one of the pros answered but when I asked him the dimensions of the plate so I could get started he said he didn't know them and was unwilling to find out for me. So I had to take everything out and measure the front plate in order to get started.
